About Sophos Alpha

A large share of daily flow is mechanical and can be estimated before it happens. We measure it.

Who writes it

Sophos Alpha is written by Christos Galerakis, who builds every model behind it. The desk is independent: no bank, broker or fund pays for the research, and nothing on these pages is written to sell a product.

How the research is made

The models read public and licensed data: futures and options markets, the CFTC commitments of traders, order book depth, prime brokerage reports, economic releases, and market history running back to 1928. Each model is checked against the published positions of the funds it tracks, and where a claim depends on history, the history is run and shown rather than asserted.

What is published is the output: levels, flows, regimes, where a cohort flips from buyer to seller. How the numbers are produced stays on the desk. We show the test. We do not show the parameters.

What we do not do

We do not manage money, run a fund, or take payment for coverage. We do not publish trade recommendations, price targets or signals to act on. We do not sell the models, the data or the subscriber list. When a call plays out, we link back to the note that made it, and when it does not, we say so.

The name

Sophos is the Greek word for wise. The mark is a philosopher beside an Ionic column, and the desk is run from Crete. The alpha is the one every reader is after, and the premise of the desk is that most of it sits in flows that can be measured before they arrive.
